Design a bas-relief abstract artwork using smalti and different kind of materials mosaicking beautiful levels and textures!
I'm exited to announce that Carole Choucair Oueijan is coming back for a second workshop in the Netherlands!!
We will start with some inspiration of abstract art and learn a little about balance of shapes and beautiful harmonious colors in an abstract work.
Some designs can be shared and each student is encouraged to create her/his own design. Watercolor paint will be available if you like to paint it first.
Once the design is ready, you will learn how to construct levels and volumes for your substrate out of foam blocks, like spheres or cubes. Other kind of shapes will be constructed with metal mesh.
With all these elements, you will build the bas-relief over the canvas provided. We might need to fortify some areas with thinset to make it ready for your mosaic.
Then it is time to mosaic. Two techniques will be used for this project. You will be lucky to learn the indirect technique here to give a smooth and soft touch to some areas on your piece.
Carole will teach you an ancient technique where you make your own temporary glue for it and explore the reveal on a special shaped area. Usually this technique is made for flat mosaics and murals to last forever.
Casting of the indirect mosaics will be happening the day after.
On the other hand, you will continue your project using the direct technique, using 3 kinds of adhesives: Thinset, Weldbond and HoneyDoo Zuper glue for glass on glass technique.
Also some special art papers can be available for people interested on working with mixed media. Just for the fun of it.
Carole will help you learn how to cut smalti and glass and how to use special shells, beads and other materials to accomplish one of a kind artwork!
The workshop language will be English. Carole also speaks French.
The workshop will be held in Studio Paradise Mosaics
